Instagram Reel specs
Reels use 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. The same dimensions apply to the Reel cover image, the still frame that represents the Reel in your grid and on the explore page.
Reel videos can be up to 90 seconds long. The cover is critical because it's what shows up when someone scrolls past your grid; a strong cover moves people from glance to tap.
Reel cover safe zone
If your Reel cover is meant to read on the explore page AND inside your profile grid, design for both crops. The grid crops to a 1:1 square showing only the central 1080×1080 of your 1080×1920 cover. The explore page shows the full 9:16. Anything important should fit inside the 1080×1080 center band.
Reel vs Story cover ratio

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a Reel cover and a regular cover?
Reel cover is 9:16 (1080×1920), but Instagram crops the central 1:1 (1080×1080) when displaying it in your grid. Design for both crops or you'll lose the message in grid view.
Can I use the same video for Reels and TikTok?
Yes. Both platforms use 9:16 at 1080×1920. Same export, two destinations. The audio policies differ. TikTok's audio library is its own; if you use platform-licensed Instagram audio, it won't carry over.
What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, written as width:height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio because 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9. The ratio describes the shape of the rectangle, independent of size. A 1280×720 image is also 16:9.
How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?
Divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. To get the simplified form, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height and divide both by it. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, GCD(1920, 1080) = 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator above does this instantly.
Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?
Yes. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, which equals 16÷9. Full HD video, most monitors, and standard YouTube videos are all 16:9 at 1920×1080.
What aspect ratio is best for Instagram?
Instagram supports four ratios. Square 1:1 at 1080×1080 for feed posts. Portrait 4:5 at 1080×1350 for taller feed posts (recommended for organic reach). Landscape 1.91:1 at 1080×566 for wide posts. Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 for Stories and Reels.
What ratio should I use for TikTok?
TikTok uses 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. The same applies to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. One vertical export covers all three.
