Instagram aspect ratios in 2026
Instagram supports four ratios across its surfaces. Square 1:1 (1080×1080) for classic feed posts. Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350) for taller feed posts that take up more screen real estate. Landscape 1.91:1 (1080×566) for wide images and link previews. Vertical 9:16 (1080×1920) for Stories and Reels.
Of these four, 4:5 portrait is the current go-to for feed engagement and 9:16 is mandatory for Reels. 1:1 square is still common for symmetrical designs and grid consistency. 1.91:1 landscape is rarely the right choice unless your image is genuinely wide.
What gets cropped if you upload the wrong ratio
Upload a 16:9 image to a feed post and Instagram crops it to 1.91:1, cutting top and bottom. Upload a 9:16 vertical to a feed post and Instagram crops to 4:5, cutting heavily. Upload anything other than 9:16 to a Story or Reel and Instagram letterboxes the result with platform-colored bars or zooms in to fit, depending on the surface.

What size is best for an Instagram feed post in 2026?
1080×1350 (4:5 portrait) for engagement-focused content. 1080×1080 (1:1 square) if you need symmetry or cross-platform reuse.
Can I post the same image to feed, Story, and Reel?
Not without cropping. Feed prefers 4:5 (1080×1350); Story and Reel both need 9:16 (1080×1920). Use image mode in the calculator to export both sizes from one source.
Why does my Story image look low-quality?
Either you uploaded under 1080 wide (Instagram upscales and softens) or you uploaded a non-9:16 ratio that got resized. Always export Stories at exactly 1080×1920.
What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, written as width:height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio because 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9. The ratio describes the shape of the rectangle, independent of size. A 1280×720 image is also 16:9.
How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?
Divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. To get the simplified form, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height and divide both by it. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, GCD(1920, 1080) = 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator above does this instantly.
Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?
Yes. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, which equals 16÷9. Full HD video, most monitors, and standard YouTube videos are all 16:9 at 1920×1080.
