Instagram Story specs

Stories use 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. Stories are full-screen on phones and disappear after 24 hours, so the format is built for mobile-first attention.

Stories support photos, videos up to 60 seconds, GIFs, and interactive stickers. The aspect ratio requirement is the same regardless of media type.

The Story safe zone

Phone UI overlays the top and bottom of every Story. The username and time appear in the top 250 pixels. The reply bar and reactions sit in the bottom 250 pixels. Keep critical text and faces inside the central 1080×1420 zone.

If you're designing a Story template, build a 1080×1920 canvas, then mark the top and bottom 250-pixel bands as safe-zone boundaries. Your viewer will not see what's outside.

What happens if you skip the spec

Upload a square image and Instagram pillarboxes it inside the 9:16 frame, leaving colored bars on top and bottom. Upload a 16:9 horizontal and the same letterboxing happens, but vertically. Either way, you've burned attention on whitespace instead of content.

Frequently asked questions

What's the file size limit for Instagram Story photos?

30MB for photos, 4GB for videos. Photos under 30MB upload without compression artifacts.

Can I post a square photo as a Story?

Yes, but Instagram pillarboxes it with platform-colored backgrounds. For a clean Story, crop to 9:16 first.

Why does my Story text get cut off?

Probably outside the safe zone. Keep all text inside the central 1080×1420 area to avoid being covered by the username header or reply bar.

What is an aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, written as width:height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio because 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9. The ratio describes the shape of the rectangle, independent of size. A 1280×720 image is also 16:9.

How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?

Divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. To get the simplified form, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height and divide both by it. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, GCD(1920, 1080) = 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator above does this instantly.

Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?

Yes. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, which equals 16÷9. Full HD video, most monitors, and standard YouTube videos are all 16:9 at 1920×1080.

What aspect ratio is best for Instagram?

Instagram supports four ratios. Square 1:1 at 1080×1080 for feed posts. Portrait 4:5 at 1080×1350 for taller feed posts (recommended for organic reach). Landscape 1.91:1 at 1080×566 for wide posts. Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 for Stories and Reels.

What ratio should I use for TikTok?

TikTok uses 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. The same applies to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. One vertical export covers all three.
