X (Twitter) aspect ratios in 2026
X uses 16:9 (1600×900) for image posts displayed in the timeline, 3:1 (1500×500) for the profile header, and 1:1 (400×400 minimum) for profile pictures. Link card images use 1.91:1 (1200×628), same as Facebook OG.
X expanded to display vertical and square images more cleanly in 2024, but 16:9 horizontal is still the safest default for in-timeline posts. Vertical 4:5 displays well too.
Header and profile
Header: 1500×500 (3:1). The header is partially covered by the profile picture overlay on the bottom-left, so keep critical content toward the top-right. Profile picture: 400×400, displayed as a circle.
Image posts in feed
When posting an image, X displays a preview crop in the feed and the full image when clicked. The timeline preview is roughly 16:9, so a 16:9 image shows the entire image without cropping. Square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) work too but get cropped to a 16:9 preview, with viewers tapping to see the full image.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best image size for an X post?
1600×900 (16:9) for clean timeline display. 1200×675 also works at the same ratio and uploads faster.
Why does my Twitter header look cropped?
Probably the profile picture overlap. The bottom-left ~250 pixels are covered by the circular profile photo. Design for the visible area, which is roughly the top-right two-thirds of your 1500×500 image.
What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, written as width:height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio because 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9. The ratio describes the shape of the rectangle, independent of size. A 1280×720 image is also 16:9.
How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?
Divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. To get the simplified form, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height and divide both by it. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, GCD(1920, 1080) = 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator above does this instantly.
Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?
Yes. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, which equals 16÷9. Full HD video, most monitors, and standard YouTube videos are all 16:9 at 1920×1080.
What aspect ratio is best for Instagram?
Instagram supports four ratios. Square 1:1 at 1080×1080 for feed posts. Portrait 4:5 at 1080×1350 for taller feed posts (recommended for organic reach). Landscape 1.91:1 at 1080×566 for wide posts. Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 for Stories and Reels.
What ratio should I use for TikTok?
TikTok uses 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. The same applies to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. One vertical export covers all three.
