Where 9:16 is used

9:16 is the vertical phone-screen ratio. Instagram Reels, Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat Snaps and Stories, Facebook Stories, Pinterest Idea Pins. If a piece of content is meant to be watched on a phone held vertically, it should be 9:16.

Vertical-first content has overtaken the feed on every major social platform since 2022. If you're not exporting at 9:16 for short-form video, you're getting auto-cropped or letterboxed and losing both watch time and reach.

Common 9:16 dimensions

1080×1920 is the standard. Every platform listed above accepts and recommends it. Some accept higher resolutions like 1440×2560, but 1080×1920 is the universal safe size. Small enough to upload fast, large enough to look sharp on any phone.

Watch out for the safe zone

Phone UIs cover the top and bottom of 9:16 video with platform chrome (usernames, captions, action buttons, navigation bars). Keep important text and faces inside the central 1080×1420 area. The calculator gives you the full 1080×1920 export. Composing inside the safe zone is on you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post the same 9:16 video to Reels, TikTok, and Shorts?

Yes. All three accept 1080×1920. The calculator's image mode exports the same source as one PNG you can drop into all three platforms.

Do I need a different size for Stories versus Reels?

No. Both Instagram Stories and Reels use 1080×1920 (9:16). Same export, different placement.

What goes in the 9:16 safe zone?

Keep critical text and faces in the central area, roughly 1080 wide by 1420 tall. The top 250 pixels and bottom 250 pixels often get covered by platform UI.

What is an aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height, written as width:height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio because 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9. The ratio describes the shape of the rectangle, independent of size. A 1280×720 image is also 16:9.

How do I calculate the aspect ratio of an image?

Divide width by height to get the decimal ratio. To get the simplified form, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of width and height and divide both by it. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, GCD(1920, 1080) = 120, so the ratio is 16:9. The calculator above does this instantly.

Is 1920×1080 a 16:9 aspect ratio?

Yes. 1920÷1080 = 1.778, which equals 16÷9. Full HD video, most monitors, and standard YouTube videos are all 16:9 at 1920×1080.

What aspect ratio is best for Instagram?

Instagram supports four ratios. Square 1:1 at 1080×1080 for feed posts. Portrait 4:5 at 1080×1350 for taller feed posts (recommended for organic reach). Landscape 1.91:1 at 1080×566 for wide posts. Vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 for Stories and Reels.

What ratio should I use for TikTok?

TikTok uses 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 pixels. The same applies to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. One vertical export covers all three.
