Discord uses four images in four different places, and each one has its own frame. Here are the discord banner dimensions placement by placement, with the upload size that survives Discord's compression.
One shortcut that saves an export: build the server banner and the invite splash on the same 16:9 artboard. Same ratio, same artwork, two sizes out.
Discord server banner size
The server banner is 960x540 pixels at 16:9. It sits at the top of the channel list, above your channel names, and it unlocks at Server Boost level 2 (7 boosts). Design at 960x540 and export a 1920x1080 version of the same artwork, because Discord compresses uploads and the 2x file keeps type and logo edges clean. The channel list crowds the lower part of the banner in narrow windows, so keep your wordmark in the upper half.
Discord profile banner size
The discord profile banner size is 600x240 pixels at minimum, and 680x240 is the version worth uploading. It's a Nitro perk, it runs across the top of your profile card, and your avatar overlaps the bottom-left corner. Keep the left 140 pixels or so clear of anything you want people to read, and remember how small that card renders on mobile: one bold shape or a short line of text lands better than a detailed illustration.
Invite splash size
The invite splash is the background behind your server name when someone opens an invite link. It uses the same 16:9 frame as the server banner, 960x540 at minimum and 1920x1080 recommended, and it unlocks at Boost level 1 (2 boosts), which makes it the cheapest banner slot to turn on. Discord darkens the image and lays the server name, member count, and join button over the middle, so pick artwork that still reads with a dark scrim on top.
Server icon size
The server icon isn't a banner, but it ships alongside one. Upload 512x512 at 1:1. Discord crops it to a circle, and most members only ever see it at about 32 pixels in the server rail, so a single letter, a simple mark, or a bold shape beats a detailed logo every time.
Boost levels, Nitro, and animated Discord banners
Every banner slot on Discord is gated behind Server Boosts or Nitro, and the boost thresholds moved a while back. Here's what unlocks where, so you know whether the banner you're designing can actually go live.
Which banner needs which boost level
Level 1 takes 2 boosts and unlocks the invite splash plus an animated server icon. Level 2 takes 7 boosts and unlocks the server banner along with better audio quality. Level 3 takes 14 boosts and adds a vanity invite URL and the animated version of the server banner. If your server sits at a couple of boosts, put the design effort into the invite splash: it's the first thing anyone outside the server ever sees.
Animated banner specs
Animated banners are GIFs, and they keep the dimensions of their static versions: 960x540 for a server banner at Boost level 3, 600x240 (or a 680x240 upload) for a profile banner with Nitro. Keep the loop short and the motion small. A slow gradient drift or one moving element reads as deliberate, while a fast full-frame animation looks noisy next to a channel list and pushes the file size up fast.
Discord banner ratio and file limits
The discord banner ratio is 16:9 for the server banner and the invite splash, and 5:2 for the profile banner. The 680x240 upload people recommend is a touch wider than 5:2, and it fills the profile card without upscaling. Discord caps these image uploads at 10MB, which is plenty for a still and tight for a long GIF.
